About
The Ninth Age: a game built by its community
The Ninth Age is a free tabletop miniature wargame. It was created in 2015 by veteran hobbyists and tournament players as a spiritual successor to Warhammer Fantasy Battles.
It is not company owned and is licenced that allows any from selling it. Its rules, army books and background are written, tested, translated, illustrated and designed by through the years hundreads of volunters from all over the world.
Volunteers give their evenings and weekends to the project. (We suspecct a lot of work hours have also been used.) One branch of volunteers write rule, playtest them and balance them. A different branch
write lore, create artworks and translate. Everything they make is released to the community, and everyone else to use free of charge.
The 9th-Age exists because players decided to build the game they wanted to play and share it with everyone.
About Laurens
Laurens is the Head of Layout for The Ninth Age's official rulebooks. He works with writers, rules designers, artists and translators across the project to turn their work into the finished books that players download and use at their tables and tournaments. Like everyone else on the team, he does this as a volunteer, unpaid, because he loves the game and its community.
About the shop
This shop is Laurens' own business, and it is separate from his volunteer work. It offers professionally printed versions of 9th-Age rules and gaming aids.
To be clear about how it works:
- The 9th-Age rules are, and always will be free. You never need to buy anything here to play the game.
- The shop is run for profit. When you buy something, you are paying for printing, materials and Laurens' time producing a physical product.
-
The volunteer work stays volunteer work. Laurens' layout work on the official rulebooks is unpaid, and this shop does not change that.
This shop is not operated by 9th-Age. If you enjoy having a printed copy on your gaming table, the shop is here for you. If you would rather print your own or play from the free PDFs, that's exactly what The Ninth Age is built for. All available here.
